Star weaving

For the past couple weeks, with a large basket of yarn and an endless supply of beach sticks, we’ve been weaving up a storm. We’ve been doing stick loom weaving with wishbone sticks and we’ve even created our own peg looms. And then I stumbled across this star weaving project on Pinterest and thought it might be a fun new project to try. I also thought it might appeal to Marlow, who hasn’t been able to do the other weaving projects on her own because they’re slightly trickier. It turned out to be such a fun project that all the kids enjoyed, and I’m loving the pretty results!

Here’s what you need:

-Cardboard (or tagboard)
-scissors
-pen or pencil
-yarn or embroidery string
-I also used a bowl to trace the circular shape onto the cardboard

Here are the steps:

-Cut out cardboard circles (ours were roughly 15cm wide)
-Mark 12 (or 8) even notches along the circle
-Use scissors to cut at the notches (about 1cm in)
-Choose your yarn colour. Tie a knot at the end of a piece of yarn and slot the yarn into one of the slices (knot at the back of the cardboard).
-Start weaving and have fun with different patterns. (I found this chart to be helpful in explaining the various patterns to the kids.)
