If only there had been a cafe like Bear and Wolf around the corner when my two were younger. I don’t think I can remember a single coffee date back then that didn’t end with a lukewarm beverage and a cranky toddler tugging at my hair. Thankfully now more and more cafes in London are starting to wise up to the benefits of catering for their littlest customers. It’s a well known fact that happy children equal happy parents and happy parents are definitely good for business.

Leading the field in our local area is Bear + Wolf Cafe on Fortess Road in Tufnell Park. Over the past few years this busy parade has undergone a much needed revamp and some really cool shops have moved in, including Eenymeeny kids, Diverse and of course old favourite Ruby Violet Ice Creams.

Bear and Wolf was dreamt up back in 2014 by Matthew Neel – previously of the Raw Food Cafe at Triyoga Primrose Hill. After struggling to find any really nice local cafes to hang out in with his then toddler he decided to try and create the perfect cafe for parents.

At first glance the cafe appears to be a mostly grown up affair with large wooden communal tables, industrial decor and the scent of strong fresh coffee, wafting through from the busy open kitchen. But look a little closer and you start to notice small clues as to what makes this place different, such as colourful kid-proof bowls and cereal jars, shelves stocked with healthy kids snacks (Ella’s kitchen food pouches and Bear Fruit Paws to name a few) and sweet little glass milk bottles stacked in vintage wooden trays. Venture past the Buggy Parking through to the back room and you will find a children’s playroom crammed with all manner of toys, books, rocking horses and even fancy dress. Theres also a small but perfectly formed outside terrace for sunny days and adequate baby changing facilities.

The breakfast/lunch menu is small but tasty with the majority of food sourced from local suppliers such as neighbouring butcher Meat NW5 and fishmonger Jonathan Norris across the road and for those in search of a good strong cup of coffee they serve Shoreditch’s Ozone which packs a punch. But for us the real winners on the menu are the delicious homemade juices and smoothies, we can’t get enough of their smooth creamy Mango Lassis and the all day breakfast smoothie – so good!
