Winter fun: Ice skating outside the Rijksmuseum

One of the most beautiful things about Amsterdam is how much the city transforms with the seasons — there are so many transient moments to enjoy. While in the Summer there are many outdoor cafes, playgrounds and splash pools to entertain the kids, as the warm weather comes to an end many of these places that were previously brimming with life and activity wind down to a close for the cold months ahead. Luckily however, there are exciting events and activities to enjoy even throughout the Winter — a particularly special one being the ice skating rink at Muesumplein.

Located right in the centre of Amsterdam’s museum district with the Rijksmuseum as its breathtaking backdrop, the ICE*Amsterdam Ice Rink is the perfect place to bring the family over Winter. You can book tickets ahead online (which will save you money) or you can pay for entry and skate rental for the family on the spot — children’s skates start at size 28, or for the littler ones you can rent ‘crabs’ that attach to the child’s shoe.

ICE*Amsterdam has an adjoining restaurant where you can take a break from skating and warm up with some hot chocolates (or Glühwein for the grown ups) and enjoy a cosy lunch indoors. The menu offers a variety of meal options ranging from snacks to full meals — and of course includes some more traditional Dutch choices such as croquettes and bitterballen.

And of course once you’ve filled up on bitterballen, frites and poffertjes, you can head back to the rink to use up all that newfound energy . The ice skating rink is very well catered to children — there are wooden chairs available to use for assistance, and of course the atmosphere is very child friendly.

Come night time the rink transforms into a colourful display of lights and becomes a lot busier as more people join in the fun. If you want to avoid large crowds it is best to come earlier in the day, just after opening time.

If you happen to be visiting Amsterdam between the 17th – 30th of December you can also enjoy the wonderful atmosphere provided by ICE*Village next door – a beautiful Christmas market that offers a variety of foods and gifts under a canopy of pretty Christmas lights.
