According to this article, Dutch children enjoy one of the happiest childhoods in the world, and one of the reasons given for this is the fact that many of them start their morning with ‘hagelslag’ (chocolate sprinkles) on their bread. I’m not sure how much influence the exact sort of breakfast has on the overall happiness of children; to me it seems that as long as it is a healthy, nutritious and delicious one and is enjoyed in a safe, warm and loving surrounding, it is a good one. But, I’m pleased to hear my kids are growing up in such a happy place.
I recently received the beautiful book Little Tables: Breakfasts from Around the World and it’s all about breakfast, presented by 32 children from 32 different countries around the world. The book is amazingly well designed, featuring gorgeous photography of beautifully dressed and styled children — just for this, the book is a gem. It is just lovely to look at the photos of all these adorable children from around the world, with their different ethnicities and photographed with the varieties of food they eat in the morning. A feast for the eye.
But then there is the added bonus of the fact that this book is also a cookbook. For each country, a few highly inspiring recipes accompany the dishes presented, adding up to 72 (anytime) breakfast recipes from different cultures. How wonderful is that? Just flipping through the book left me with so many ideas to introduce my children to different tastes from around the world that I’m afraid that they will never have hagelslag for breakfast again!
Little Tables is a beautiful and inspirational book that I can highly recommend to either get or gift. It is available from Amazon (UK or US ).
