Bakeri is the kind of café I would visit daily if either of the two locations were a bit closer to my house: casual and welcoming, with an excellent selection of house-baked breads, good coffee, and an appealing menu of breakfast and lunch choices. That the light-filled space also the most dreamy wallpaper in all of New York is another huge plus — I never tire of looking at it, and it brings warmth to even the most dreary or cold days!
A long communal farmhouse table occupies most of the café, and a counter with several stools fronts the bakery area of the space in the rear. Orders are placed at the counter and arrive swiftly: housemade granola, biscuits and eggs, and avocado toast in the morning (or all day, if you wish); sandwiches with smoked chicken, arugula, red onion and chipotle mayo or soppressata and gruyere, salads with kale, kasha, fennel, and olives, and a daily soup choice as the afternoon stretches on. This is the kind of food I’m always in the mood for, made with only the best fresh, organic, and local ingredients, and with little twists and tweaks aimed at making it both interesting and satisfying. The case of baked goods stretching along the left-hand side of the room waits for an after-meal selection, or to pick up something to go. Even when full, it’s hard to turn down just a little something sweet — the choices are always so good (that’s a strawberry, cherry, brown butter crumble scone above – yum!).
