We’ve had a few very cold days this winter in New York, and as a result I’ve been on the hunt for new indoor activities to add to our mix of favorites. This morning we stopped by Family Bowl at Brooklyn Bowl and were absolutely won over by the combination of kid-friendly bowling, well-executed bistro food, and great music. Every lane was packed with other families – so packed we had to wait a bit for a lane to open up — and children may very well have outnumbered adults. It had been at least six or seven years since I last bowled so I’d forgotten how much fun bowling can be, even for those of us decidedly on the beginner end of the spectrum! Bowling was a completely new concept for my daughter, but she absolutely loved it.
By night, Brooklyn Bowl is something of a hybrid space: a popular bar and concert venue for the 21 and over crowd that also happens to have a bowling alley and restaurant. But from 11am-5pm on Saturdays and 11am-6pm on Sundays, the venue opens its doors to families, providing bowling shoes as small as toddler size 6 (Euro size 22), bowling ball ramps, and the option to add lane bumpers for those in your party who might benefit from them. You can eat in the restaurant or order food to enjoy on the comfortable couches at each lane, and there’s plenty of room to park strollers and spread out.
Beyond bowling, Brooklyn Bowl also hosts daytime concerts aimed at children and families. Rock and Roll Playhouse at Brooklyn Bowl is a weekly family concert series that helps educate children about classic, pop, and contemporary rock music while encouraging movement and creativity. I’m adding these to my list for the next frigid weekend day!
