Santa Caterina Market, Barcelona

Only a 5 minute walk away from the Cathedral of Barcelona, and near the popular shopping area of the portal de Angel, this market is a go-to for the locals. Designed by architects Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue, this building has become an emblematic building in Barcelona. The sea of colours found on the roof mimic the pigments found in fruit and veg designed by artist Toni Comella. The market was inaugurated in 1848 when an old convent ‘Santa Caterina’ (where the markets name comes from), was demolished and the grounds donated to the city in order to build a market; in fact the first covered market of the city.

Although the Boqueria is very well known, very pretty and well worth a visit, it also is packed with people which can be a little stressful if you are there with kids; it is also very difficult to get a seat at the food stands unless you are buying ready cooked food. At Santa Caterina you will find fresh fruit stands smoothie stands, and restaurants around the market that have plenty of seating for a family.
