Located in South Kensington inside one of London’s most iconic landmarks, Bibendum is one of the capital’s prettiest dining spaces. With its high ceilings, Art Nouveau architecture and spectacular stained glass windows that drench the room in a colourful glow, its a hard restaurant to beat for classic style and ambience. Restored in 1986 by Sir Terrence Conran the Michelin building originally began life as the British headquarters of French tyre company Michelin. The building has retained many details from its original motoring heritage with tiled murals of classic cars, mosaics and stained glass images of the famous logo throughout. It’s such an elegant and intriguing building, I always have to stop and smile up at the funny looking Monsieur Bibendum also known here as The Michelin Man, looming down from above the street.
The food here is a British take on classic french cooking, with all the traditional dishes you’d expect to see on the menu such as Soup de Poisson and Cote de Boeuf. With an eye popping price tag though it’s definitely a special occasion venue rather than somewhere for a quick and easy bite. But if like us you love seafood The Oyster Bar in the entrance foyer downstairs is a much more family friendly, laid back affair and on a sunny day can be quite a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. We love to order a big plate of Cornish crab, langoustines and a side of oven roasted potatoes (posh chips) and pretend we are in Cornwall. Its such a fresh and tasty lunch and not unreasonably priced. There are also some delicious non-fishy options such as pasta, risottos, salads and some kid friendly dishes too.
Conveniently located at the back of the Michelin Building also happens to be one of my favourite furniture stores, The Conran Shop. The flagship store was opened in 1987 and has since maintained its reputation as one of the front runners of design in the UK. They stock a beautifully curated selection of homewares, furniture and lighting, from timeless design classics to the most current designers. Everything is well considered and both functional and beautiful. They also have a nice kids section – The Childshop which offers a more unique selection of toys and gifts than you would normally find on the high street. How fun are these cool slingshots made from sticks? I know a couple of little people who would love these in their christmas stockings this year.
