As I mentioned in an earlier post, we recently spent a few weeks in my family’s beach house on Bainbridge Island, spending lots of time inside due to wet, rainy weather. The kids were blowing through books at a quicker rate than normal, which, of course, was wonderful to see.
Quin, who has never been our most avid reader, has turned a corner in the past month. It’s always been a bit of a battle to get him to read 20 minutes a day, but lately we’ve found him curled up on the sofa reading for hours without ever being asked to do it. What a joy!!
I thought I’d share some of the books the boys (ages 11 and 9) have enjoyed lately in case you’re looking for book inspiration:
- Easton is loving the ‘Wings of Fire’ series by Tui T. Sutherland.
- Both boys enjoyed reading ‘All the Wrong Questions’ by Lemony Snicket, which is the first of a 4-volume series. (We’ve also loved listening to Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ audio books during our travels this year.)
- Quin discovered Beverly Cleary’s ‘Henry Huggins’ a couple weeks ago and I think this might be what triggered his love of reading lately. He’s now read ‘Henry and Ribsy’, ‘Henry and Beezus’, and ‘Henry and the Clubhouse’.
- Both boys have read ‘Hoot‘, ‘Scat‘, ‘Chomp‘ and ‘Flush‘ all by Carl Hiassen, which they’ve really enjoyed.
- Easton recently finished ‘The Tale of Despereaux‘ by Kate DiCamillo, a winner of the Newbery Medal, and it seems like a really charming story. Quin is hoping to read it next!
Please share any books your children have enjoyed lately. We’re excited to start making use of our local library in Byron Bay!
