If you come to the Western part of Paris, the Jardin du Ranelagh is sure worth a little excursion with your children. It is one of those parks designed to make kids happy! Big lawns, playground, sandbox, poney riding, sweets shop, puppet theater, ping pong tables and of course the carousel! The Jardin du Ranelagh has all a child could wish for.
The carousel is one of the two oldest in Paris. It is known by the city to have been built around 1913. The metal structure was originally home to beautiful wooden horses which were unfortunately stolen about 40 years ago. The new horses are not wooden anymore but come as close as possible to the original ones. I was told Fifi, Coco, Poly, Caramel and friends should soon be given a new coat of paint thanks to a recent change of manager.
Now to the fun facts! The carousel was inspired by an antique equestrian game where cavaliers, spear in hand, were to collect rings from a stick. If riding in Jardin du Ranelagh, your kids will be given a wooden stick to collect small metal rings from a box each time they pass close by, just like the cavaliers with their spears back in time! Once all rings have been collected, the carousel stops.
The carousel will only turn if pushed by hand. How great that a merry-go-round with no electronics at all still makes kids happy, generation after generation, don’t you think? My 3-year-old niece loves it, and her grandfather went there as a child himself!
The nice thing is that after riding one of the cute horses or being cozily swung around in the carriage of the carousel there are still plenty of things to do in the park. If you go, let us know which horse is your favorite!
