Cloth Lullaby by Amy Novesky, pictures by Isablle Arsenault

Cloth Lullaby is one of those dreamy books that deserves a special place in your home. It’s so good I almost can’t allow the girls to keep it in their bedroom; I want to show it off and tell everybody about it. I love it so much it still lives in the living room on our coffee table. Helena, my eldest, adores this book for its simple biographical feel and Florence loves it for the patterns created. I love it for its poetic tone and for the simple matter that it honours the French-American artist Louise Bourgeois whom I find fascinating; both her art and the woman herself.

Amy Novesky has captured Bourgeois’ life in a sense where you can really understand the underlying core of Bourgeois’ work and where her ideas derive. It’s a simple story of how her mother inspired her love of sculptures and woven art. Isabelle Arsenault is the illustrator for the book and it’s a perfect match. Each page is covered in cream, red and ink blue markings, some bolder than others, but each equally entrancing.

Together with the journey of words from Novesky and the incredible illustrations from Isabelle Arsenault this book is totally captivating.
