Ry 70 – Vintage kimonos, handmade children’s clothes and flea market finds in a tiny Østerbro shop

On the largely residential street of Ryesgade, is a little peach-pink shop of treasures, where you never quite know what you’re going to get. The store keeps off-kilter hours, sometimes decided by the weather, and when you walk past its single window when it’s closed, it’s intriguingly filled with dinky vintage toys and hung with small hot air balloons delicately rendered in folded origami. When the store is open, some of its wares are laid, flea market-style, out on the pavement before it.

Inside, the small shop is so tiny it seems it can be absorbed in a single glance. But it’s heaving with an eclectic mix of things that include vintage kimonos, sourced from the owner Rie Holm’s two trips to Japan, a country that she loves for its peace and politeness. As well as these are pieces of Japanese tableware – enamel bowls and some porcelain items – on a shelf at the back, and as well as the balloons, is a box of tiny origami swans on thread for hanging around your home (light and easy for taking back in luggage!). If you buy something from the store, Rie offers you a little gift of a pretty origami spinning-top-like thing, which children are always happy to have.

Near the door is a rail hung with handmade children’s clothing – smocks in Liberty prints, little dresses and shirts in loud 60s fabric and tiny sweaters, all with a brand label saying ‘Kraft’ on them. This is Rie’s own label and fabric items are made by her, while knitted pieces, which include the baby booties (just 45kr a pair!) carefully displayed in a red colander near the till, are made by a local elderly lady she’s engaged to make things for Ry 7o.

Around the shop, the shelves are full of higgledy piggledly little cut-glass sherry glasses, vintage crockery (including the Royal Copenhagen blue Christmas plates for 30kr each, and tiny blue Christmas coffee cups and saucers that I didn’t know existed). There are coloured glass water jugs, vases, retro barware, bundles of cutlery and candles tied together with ribbon and cushions in vintage fabrics. Sometimes beautiful (new) lamb or deerskins find their way here.

Essentially it’s a loppemarked (flea market) in a shop, with prices to match, and a sure-fire way to save visitors to Copenhagen from having to risk rain, or research pop-up flea markets and potentially navigating harder-to-find corners of residential neighbourhoods. Plus, if your kids have little patience with flea markets, you can get your fix fast and manageably here, with the promise of good food, treats and a park nearby: Ry 70 is on Ryesgade, right next door to La Esquina (for a yummy lunch or brunch, coffee or beer); just down the street from Leckerbaer (for amazing little cakes); and a three-minute walk from Fælledparken a block north, or the Lakes, one block south (for fresh air, running around and playing).

Open
Thu + Fri, 1pm-6pm; Sat 11am-2pm. If it’s raining, the store stays closed. If it’s sunny Mon, Tue and/or Wed, Rie will often unexpectedly open. She encourages people to call to find out, or to check Instagram @ry70_rieholm.
