Leckerbaer Pastry Shop – A special sweet stop near Copenhagen’s lakes

If a dream of a pastry shop dances around your head – the kind in which sugar and spice and everything nice is baked and shaped, whipped and whirled by hand into perfect sweet somethings – then on a quiet street running parallel to Copenhagen’s lakes, the dream is real.

Leckerbaer, surely the world’s most instagrammed spot for a treat, bakes all its little fresh-from-the-oven wares in its own small pastry kitchen, before symmetrically aligning them both perfectly and prettily. Each is a tiny masterpiece – sweet, yes, but usually with a slight Nordic twist of sourness, spice or salt to give it extra interest. The larger offerings include madeleines, blondies, meringues and almond cakes, all as classics delivered with a twist.

But it’s the småkager (small cakes) that provide both variety and fun – the selection changes almost daily and you can have one of these little soupçon for 15 kroner, or a pick-and-mix of the day’s available eight for 96. When boxed in the café’s graphically simple packaging, they make a thoughtful gift, while pre-packed bags of biscuits, caramels and ‘cookie muesli’ on a shelf nearby would also serve as a hardier, suitcase-resistant version of the same.

The space, however, begs for staying and savouring, with high stools in the window and a small cosy room in the back for settling into – all of it appealing to and fitting for children. There are often prams parked outside – usually complete with sleeping babes, as is the way in the trusting, fresh air-enthusiastic Denmark.

Despite their demeanour, the little treats aren’t precious, fussy or fiddly, served simply on small marble boards and wooden paddles alongside light lattes, varm chokolade (hot chocolate), æblesaft (apple juice) or hyldeblomst sodavand (elderflower fizz). The chocolate mousse, twisted through with panna cotta, topped with goodies AND served ‘with a bag of crunch’ is… Well, words fail.

A little off the tourist track in family ‘hood Østerbro, Leckerbaer is for taking dessert at post brunch/lunch at La Esquina down the street, or for coffee and cake dates with little ones after a run around in vast, varied Fælledparken nearby. It’s always my son’s first choice for something a little special, which is perfect because it’s secretly mine, too.
