Happy 10th Birthday to Babyccino!

Exactly ten years ago this week, Esther, Emilie and I decided to start a little blog. In the Autumn of 2007, after two years of friendship in London, Emilie moved to Paris and Esther moved to Amsterdam. As new mothers now living in different countries, we wanted to create an online space where we could continue to share our parenting discoveries with each other – from cute products and fun craft projects to travel tips and successful recipes. We decided to call our blog ‘Babyccino’. Esther and I spent an evening learning the basics of Photoshop in a small apartment in Amsterdam and quickly designed a logo with our babies on our laps. And then we wrote our first blog post on October 24th – ten years ago!  Wow!

Here are the photos we had on our ‘about’ page along with illustrations drawn by Michael. (I had to dig these up on an old computer. It’s so fun to see these again!)

What started as an online diary between friends gradually gained traction with other friends and family members. And then, before we knew it, Design Mom and other blogs started linking to us and our audience began to grow! (Meanwhile, I remember people asking me ‘what is a blog??’ when I told them about the project we had started! Isn’t it funny how things have changed?)

In 2009, we turned to a NY-based design team to create a prettier logo and make our little homemade blog look a bit more professional. Keeping the same cityscape theme, they gave us a fancy new look.  We also launched our kid-friendly city guides sharing the best places to visit in our cities.

In 2010, we felt like it was time to expand the Babyccino website. We were aware of the growing number of independent boutiques and brands in the children’s market. These brands were seeking a place to advertise and gain international exposure and we wanted to be able to provide this. We had also witnessed a trend amongst parents: mums no longer wanted to shop on the high street; they wanted to find clothes for their kids that were unique, they wanted to give birthday gifts that no one else had seen before. They were looking for inspiration! Esther, Emilie and I met up in Antwerp and put on our thinking caps for a long weekend planning session (and a few giggles! see above!). That weekend we decided to create a shopping portal — a platform for the boutiques and brands we loved.

Over the past ten years, our little company has grown and evolved so much. In fact, when you look back at all these old photos, the same can be said of the three of us (hairstyles! haha). There was even that silly time we all put on the same lipstick and took photos together. Too funny.

When we launched our shopping portal in 2011, we represented 100 boutiques, and now, six years later, we have worked with more than 750 of the best children’s boutiques from around the world. Additionally, we now have family-friendly city guides for five hip cities, and we host bi-annual ShopUp events in London, NYC and Los Angeles. It’s been a very busy ten years!

At the heart of it all, however, is our friendship and this little blog, updated daily by the three of us and a small handful of wonderfully talented contributors. We’re still doing what we set out to do ten years ago!

What started as a little project between three friends has evolved organically and steadfastly, and we could not be more proud of all that we have accomplished and learned along the way. We’re also so proud of our wonderful team and the amazing women (and one man!) who we work with on a daily basis. It excites us to think what the next ten years will bring.

To celebrate our 10th birthday, we’ll be sharing fun interviews this week with the three of us and some reflections on the past ten years. Thanks for indulging us as we take a little stroll down memory lane… ! A whole DECADE. Wow!
