Breastfeeding-friendly knitwear from Boob Design

As I’ve written before, I am a big fan of the Boob maternity and nursing products. Their basics are my favourite: I wear the Boob nursing bras daily as well as my merino wool nursing singlet, and I’ve even discovered the nursing sports bras, which I also love (I’m wearing one as I type, in fact).

In addition to the standard collection of great basics, Boob also has a stylish range of clothing that cleverly works for both pregnancy and breastfeeding.  So when founder Mia Seipel reached out and offered to send over a couple of their new organic cotton jumpers to keep me warm during the Australian winter months, I happily accepted. The Rib Knitted Sweater is perfect in this climate, and the breastfeeding function means that I can easily feed Wilkie without having to lift up my entire sweater to do so (I always feel a bit bad leaving my heavy knitwear hanging over his face when I breastfeed in my other jumpers). This has become one of my go-to pieces to wear around the house in the chilly mornings and evenings.

Made from 100% OEKO-TEX organic cotton and available in four different colours, this jumper and other pieces in their knitwear collection is now available as part of their new Autumn/Winter collection.

I also have the striped Francis Knitted Sweater, which again is another easy piece to wear when breastfeeding, and I like that Wilkie spends his days nestled up against soft, organic cotton instead of some of my scratchier wool options. (How cute is his sleepy little face in the photo above?!)

You can read more about Boob’s organic materials and sustainability work here, and find all of the new arrivals online now.

Family friendly brunch at Polpo Brasserie

Polpo Brasserie is a little outside Paris but it is one of those places definitely worth going the few extra miles. It is such a beautiful and cosy green oases on the Seine river! Exactly what you need to relax and enjoy a slower pace on a week-end morning around brunch for example! My husband and I went with Oscar (age 1) and we loved it!

The super friendly staff helped store our stroller away upon arrival, which made us feel much more comfortable to walk around. And, big bonus for a Parisian restaurant, a high chair was waiting for Oscar when we arrived at our table. (If needed, I recommend asking for one when making your reservation as there are only a few of them.)

The atmosphere was so enchanting, it felt like a mini vacation during lunchtime! The restaurant is built on a dock on the river, so you almost feel like being on a boat, minus the seasickness (Believe me, I know what I’m talking about…) ! Totally a win-win to me!
French decorator Laura Gonzalez put so much attention to detail in every little corner of the restaurant. Eating at Polpo is like having a meal in a decor magazine or a Pinterest page! But in a good way, as everything feels luxurious yet so cosy and relaxed! It is a mix and match of natural materials, vintage rugs, cushions and more modern decor accents, topped by tons of lush green plants. Just beautiful!

The food was equally amazing. My husband and I shared the Planche Polpo as an appetizer. It is a mix of different appetizers in small portions, the perfect way to taste a variety of their dishes. The salmon rillettes were delicious! My husband then ordered a delicious tuna dish and I had the mussels in white wine sauce with fries, everything tasted wonderful!

We really liked the fact that there is a lot of space around your table (for Parisian standards). When he got tired of sitting in the high chair, Oscar could easily move around our table without disturbing our neighbors or the waiters. He crawled around and played peacefully with his toys on the big carpet. And a happy kid makes happy parents, right?

So, think of it: delicious food in a wonderful setting on the river, topped by everything your kids need to be happy… Hop on that Uber and go out for brunch! I promise you won’t regret it!

A tip for parents of teenagers: don’t be afraid to say ‘no’

tip for teenagers

A while ago my cousin and I were talking to the wife of another cousin of mine, who has two children, a boy aged 20 and a girl aged 18. We both have girls who are 12 years old, who are slowly but steadily entering a whole new phase of children’s development: that of puberty and the associated physical and psychological changes and emotional challenges. So we asked our *experienced* cousin-in-law to share tips to help us ‘survive’ the teenage years.

We did discuss the general subjects of trust, reassurance, love and an open communication. But overall our cousin-in-law was super relaxed and matter-of-fact about puberty. She reassured us that it is mostly a super fun and interesting time! She said it would sort itself out and that we shouldn’t worry about it. There wasn’t any specific advice she could think of, except for one tip she thought was important to give us. She told us we shouldn’t be afraid of saying ‘no’.

Teenagers are busy, she explained. There is school, homework, all of the sports and cultural activities, and on top of that there is their hefty social life. It can be quite overwhelming for teenagers to participate with all the fun activities they are invited to join — parties, events, outings, film nights, etcetera. But, because of peer pressure, it can be difficult to say no. It simply is not cool to say that you don’t feel like going to the movies because you’re feeling tired or simply would prefer an evening at home with your parents! However, when you can’t make it because your mother (or father) won’t allow you to go, the decision is out of your hands. (Their fault!) And that can be a very nice and easy solution.

I have already thought of and used her advice a few times, and I definitely understand her point. A teenager is busy — a lot comes their way. A forced time-out from it all every now and then can be so nice! Also, I think it is important for children to learn that they shouldn’t be afraid to ‘miss out’. You simply can’t do it all, and that is ok. A cosy and quiet evening at home is nice too!

Do you have teenagers? Do you have thoughts or tricks to share? I would love to hear!

xxx Esther

A flavourful garden kale salad with Tamari and sesame

When it comes to good cooking, I feel like there are two kinds of people. There are the ones who can cook by closely following trusted recipes (this is me), and then there are people who can open their fridge, see what’s inside and feel inspired to get creative and cook up something delicious. These people are the ones who can taste a soup or a salad dressing and know exactly what it might be missing, they recognise it might need a squeeze of lemon or a dash of cumin — they just have a natural knack for cooking. Thankfully, my husband is the latter.

Michael also has a passion for growing vegetables, and our sunny terrace is exploding with yummy produce right now. We’ve got salad greens, herbs, tomatoes, and chilli peppers all ripe for the picking. So last week Michael came into the kitchen with a basket of greens from the terrace and an idea for a tasty salad. For lunch that day he served up the most delicious salad I’ve eaten in a long time, so good that I asked him to make it again a few days later (and this time I took notes). It’s a wonderful way to eat dark leafy greens, the seeds give it an extra crunch, and the asian-style dressing adds a depth of flavour that goes beyond your typical salad. Yum! Here is the recipe:

Garden kale salad with Tamari and sesame dressing:

Salad Ingredients:

-One bunch of kale, roughly torn (you can substitute with other salad greens)
-One bunch of Okinawa spinach (again, any spinach will do)
-One small bunch of fresh mint
-One handful of fresh parsley
-One handful of fresh coriander
-One red bell pepper, chopped (coincidentally, a pepper is called a capsicum here in Australia)
-Half a fennel bulb, thinly sliced
-One chilli pepper, finely chopped (optional)
-A sprinkle of sesame seeds
-A small handful of sunflower seeds
-Nasturtium flowers and leaves

Salad Dressing:

-2 tablespoons tamari
-3 tablespoons Japanese rice vinegar
-2 tablespoons olive oil
-1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
-1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
-½ garlic clove, grated

Enjoy!

Bontemps – delicious pastries in the Marais

Located on rue de Bretagne, not far from Marché des Enfants Rouges, Bontemps is one of those places you enter and like everything you see! The family run pastry shop is small and sweet with a clean aesthetic and beautiful patterns all over. Their own patterns adorn the walls and a beautiful tiled floor gives the shop a little twist.

Pastries are presented on flowery vintage china, cake stands and bell jars. A cute blue cabinet filled with the later looks like taken straight out of a dollhouse and blown up to human size. It makes you feel a little like Alice in Wonderland!

What makes Bontemps so wonderful are of course the utterly delicious and so, so beautiful pastries! Fiona and Fatina, the two sisters behind the brand, create little wonders on a daily basis. Just look at how beautiful each and every little pie or cake looks: the level of detail in their work really is mind-blowing! Wait until you taste them! I still recall the scrumptious chocolate hazelnut pie and a pear tartlet gone too fast…!

Bontemps’ pastries are made of a shortbread base, covered with delicate creams or tender chocolate and topped off with fresh fruits, roughly ground nuts or almonds. The bigger pies come either as one piece or, as a cleverly already divided pie that looks like one petal-shaped pie but is really 6 individual pieces. How genius! No more destroying a beautiful pastry when cutting it for your guests, or family!

Bite-sized tartlets are a great option to taste all kinds of flavors without having to buy and eat as many different bigger pies. Although it is really tempting to do so!

The shortbread is also available as little round biscuits that sell like hot cake, if I may say so! I have tasted them in the shop but have never been able to buy a box… they are delicious! Be quick or order a box a few days in advance if you want to make sure to get some. Owner Fiona explained that their soft and especially crumbly texture is ideal for smaller children.

You will leave the shop with beautiful packaging too: the boxes and bags are printed in beautiful geometrical and flowery patterns in appealing yet discreet colors. They make for the perfect hostess gift or birthday present for a dear friend.

Bontemps is a feast for the eyes and the palate for the whole family! Let us know what you think if you go!

Cantina del Ponte Tower Bridge – Authentic Italian Cuisine and Breathtaking Riverside Views

Cantina Del Ponte is a traditional Italian trattoria situated right beside the River Thames. Just a stones throw from popular attractions such as the Tower of London, HMS Belfast and the Shard. Boasting panoramic views of Tower Bridge and the gleaming cityscape beyond, it is a truly memorable spot for a meal.

The welcome here is warm and relaxed, in true Italian style. And if you can tear your eyes away from the view, you’ll find the menu is filled with an array of mouthwatering regional dishes and plenty of reliable family favourites too.

We were lucky to visit Cantina Del Ponte on a balmy summers evening so obviously chose to make the most of the beautiful surroundings by dining alfresco. The outside tables fill up quickly so if you are heading down on a warm day, get there early to grab the best spots.

Our food was delicious and exactly what we were hoping for, well cooked, simple dishes packed with flavour. Including prosciutto with melone — so sweet, the kind you rarely find in this country (of course the melons had to be from Italy). And a Spaghetti allo Scoglio one of my favourite dishes and the best I’ve tasted since we were in Positano.

We ended the meal with the most incredible nectarines soaked in red wine, complimented by a perfectly sour lemon sorbet. The kids enjoyed free Bambino Sundaes – a half ice cream/half milkshake concoction piled high with all sorts of goodies. Needless to say these went down a storm.  Complimentary Bambino Sundaes are on offer to all kids until the end of August when parents dine from the À la carte menu.

Cantina del Ponte are offering Babyccino readers 20% off their total bill (includes À la carte food and drinks) for any meal booked until the end of September. Simply quote Babyccino when booking your table with the restaurant.

Norman & Jules — a whimsical toy shop

Norman&Jules toy shop

Norman & Jules is a toy and accessories shop in the old-fashioned kind of way. It’s the sort of place where you lose track of time when you’re discovering all of the most wonderful toys and imaginative finds. You will find intriguing science kits, amazingly cool musical instruments, a want-able collection of cards, stamps and stickers, a delightful selection of adorable baby clothes and accessories, creative art and sewing supplies that will make your fingers itch… and much, much more.

Norman&Jules

All the toys in the Norman & Jules collection are carefully selected from small, independent and environmentally conscious producers from all over the world. They are always pretty and well-designed (so they will look lovely in your house!) and they always support imaginative, organic play and encourage growth in young children. In short — the sorts of toys that we love!

We’re so happy that Norman & Jules will be joining us at the NY ShopUp again this September! I can’t wait to browse their stand and to find out what new products they have discovered in the world of toys and accessories. There are a few things that I’m already eager to check out:

Norman&Jules toy shop

  1. These pretty paper dolls by Of Unusual Kind. I like the old-fashioned, simple principle executed in a modern way. My girls would love these!
  2. . The ‘Make a Face‘ toy by Rock and Pebble. What a fun idea! I think especially Casper would play with this all the time (although I’m sure if I would leave this out on the coffee table, we all would feel inclined to change the daily mood of this face). I picked up the ‘Make me a sweater rabbit‘ for Ava last year and she loves it — she really mastered the cross-stitch technique with this toy.
  3. These darling Indigo Moon baby shoes by Camper General Store. (I know the cutest little baby boy who I think would look adorable in these!)
  4. The soft toys from Ouistitine. Hand-made by a Canadian mum, from re-used natural materials. Need I say more?

Wave Hill — a public garden and cultural center

We’re lucky in New York to have a number of lovely botanical gardens to visit. We often stop by one of our favorites, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, as it’s closest to our home, but this past weekend we decided to do something a bit different and traveled to the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx to visit Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center. My husband and I had been once before, years ago, and fondly remembered it as a beautiful place to spend time on a summer day. The gardens are still lovely – lush and just a little bit wild – but what we hadn’t noticed last time, and what surprised us most on this visit, is what a perfect place the gardens are for children.

Perched high above the Hudson River with commanding views of the Palisades on the opposite bank, Wave Hill was built as a country home in 1843. Over the years a number of notable figures stayed at the mansion and surrounding gardens, including Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and, for six years (1950-1956), chief members of the British delegation to the United Nations. Deeded to the city in 1960, Wave Hill is one of 33 City-owned cultural institutions, and through a variety of programming aims to foster the connection between people and nature.

We spent most of our visit wandering the grounds and exploring various sections of the gardens. Wave Hill has a different feel than New York’s other botanical gardens – less manicured and manufactured and more down to earth. Beds and pots overflow with flowers and plants, but outside of the conservatory, very few species are labeled (though tours are available if you’re inclined to want to learn more about what your’e looking at). Everywhere you look there is something new to discover, with layers of plantings and collections of planted vessels displayed at seemingly every turn, and a myriad of paths leading to all corners of the property. A visit here seems as much about looking, absorbing, and appreciating your surroundings as anything else, and the vast open river vistas make this an easy place to pause and take it all in. My daughter loved scrutinizing the map and choosing which section to venture to next, and we followed her lead, wandering through the Conservatory, crossing the gardens at her pace from end to end, and watching her run carefree across the expansive Lower Lawn.

The Aquatic Garden proved to be one of our favorite sections, and my daughter would have happily looked for and watched the goldfish all afternoon in the small pool. Nearby is the Wave Hill House, where we found the Sally and Gilbert Kerlin Learning Center, site of the garden’s free Family Art Project, held from 10am-1pm each Saturday and Sunday. The theme during our visit was “Fishy Fun” and we walked into a large classroom packed with busy families working to create 3-D fish from the array of provided materials. Once finished and attached to sticks with a length of yarn, we saw the colorful fish throughout the gardens, dancing and fluttering as children raced and played. Family garden walks, nature walks, and gallery tours are also available, and you can see what’s on offer during your visit by checking the Events Calendar and filtering by “Family.”

A few additional details:

  • We drove to the gardens, where onsite parking is available for $8. Free off-site parking can be found a short distance away, and you can either walk or take a shuttle from there to the gardens. Public transit options include taking Metro North to the Riverdale Station or taking the #1 subway train to its terminus at W. 242nd Street. Full descriptions of all options can be found under Directions on Wave Hill’s site.
  • We ate lunch at the onsite café, which had a children’s menu along with plenty of high chairs and booster seats. A picnic area is also available if you wish to bring your own lunch.
  • We arrived around 11am on a Saturday and learned that admission is free on Tuesdays and on Saturdays from 9am-12pm. Such a nice surprise!
