The leafy hilltop enclave of Highgate in North London has a lot going for it, with loads of inviting pubs, tasty organic delis, grocers, flowers stalls and even a good kids boutique — but one thing that Highgate has been missing is a decent independent restaurant. You see Highgate, despite it’s unique village-y feel, has until now been dominated by run of the mill chain restaurants such as Pizza Express, Cote and Strada. There’s no denying that these places are all fine for a quick, reasonably priced bite to eat and the kids certainly love them but I’ve always felt that this area could do a lot better. Now finally an exciting new restaurant has moved in to fill the void.
Ostuni – who have another well established branch in Queen’s Park serve authentic Puglian cuisine and wines. The menu pays homage to the simple flavours of the region, with traditional pastas such as orecchiette, seafood dishes and variations of the local speciality Bombette – thinly sliced Puglian pork wrapped around provolone cheese and roasted in their ‘fornello pronto’ (stone oven).
The restaurant is rustic in style and is designed to reflect the white stone Trulli of Puglia, awash with sun bleached Puglian stone, agricultural equipment adorning the walls and an impressive salami humidor and antique meat slicer.
We ordered a mouthwatering starter of burrata served with a pepper, aubergine and tomato stew and a portion of broad bean croquettes with chilli jam, both were delicious! For mains we shared a rich and hearty seafood pasta with thick velvety ribbons of homemade pasta, crispy courgette fries, Bombette and a tasty salad of white asparagus pomegranate and pecorino cheese. Our only mistake was not leaving enough time or room for desert. A good excuse to return!
