We love how festive the city becomes at this time of year — with plenty of family-friendly activities for the kids as well. We asked the award-winning London guide, KidsIn, to list their top 5 London Christmas activities and here they are:
1) Santa’s Grotto at Duke of York Square
Santa Claus is coming to town! Well, to the Kings Road to be precise, on Saturday 13th November.
Everyone’s favourite magical man will be wobbling his belly like a bowlful of jelly this November and December in the long-awaited run up to Christmas. Children visiting the grotto will be treated to magical Christmas stories, get the chance to pass on their wish list and have a photograph with the elves. Adults are welcome too and guests are invited to make a donation to the Prince’s Foundation. Be warned that Father Christmas sadly won’t be available on Christmas eve because (of course) he’s off delivering his presents all around the globe. For priority bookings, make sure you’re signed up to the Duke of York Square newsletter.
2) Father Christmas at the Royal Albert Hall
Join us on a magical adventure through the Royal Albert Hall, led by a captivating Victorian doorkeeper who knows all of the Hall’s secrets. Together you will solve puzzles and follow clues to find the key to Father Christmas’s grotto, where a wonderful visit awaits! Children of all ages will be delighted by this interactive festive experience. Tickets are for children ages 2+, accompanying adults go FREE. The experience lasts up to 1 hour. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult at all times during these sessions. The event is aimed at children ages 2+, however if customers would like to bring a 1 – 2 year old along to meet Father Christmas and receive a present, then they need to book a ticket as normal. Babes in arms do not require a ticket and can meet Father Christmas, however will not receive a present.
3) Christmas at Kew Gardens for all the family
There’s something for everyone at this festive time of year as the one-mile sparkling path winds its way through the Gardens in a magical after dark experience. A botanical wonderland awaits, with brightly coloured laser beams dancing over water, a Tunnel of Lights, scented Fire Garden and fairy-tale avenues of flora. Santa and his elves will be in the North Pole village, plus favourite vintage rides, Christmas gifts and traditional festive fare.
For the young ones, the playful atmosphere of White Peaks will welcome you with a Victorian carousel, helter skelter, and other family rides and don’t forget to look out for Santa and his elves at the North Pole village along the way. (Rides operate from 5pm to 9.30pm – £2.50 per ride.)
Even if you’re not a big fan of living statues or fire-eaters, Covent Garden’s cobbled piazza and market buildings are irresistible at this time of year for kids ands adults alike. The decorations bring back a mistletoe theme for 2016, with over 40 mistletoe chandeliers hanging over the area’s streets and in the pretty market buildings. A huge Christmas tree glows with lights on the west side of the square, and a rather magnificent silver reindeer stands majestically on a pile of gifts on the east side. The Lego Santa Express train has pulled into the north east corner of the piazza again, too, so make sure to pay that a visit. It’s made of 500,000 Lego bricks and even has sounds, lights and smoke coming from its funnel. Oh! And don’t forget the new Lego store has opened nearby!
5) Kidzania Kids have it wrapped this Christmas
KidZania London, the child-sized City in Shepherd’s Bush is hosting the UK’s first Christmas market run by kids for kids! In addition to more than 60 role play adventures, children can visit the pop up Christmas market and create gifts which they can wrap up and take home to loved ones. The best thing is children are encouraged to work to earn KidZos (KidZania currency) to buy presents. No more need for the bank of mum and dad this Christmas! If your child is over 8 years olds then they are able to explore and shop by themselves, therefore children are empowered to make their own decisions while parents can shop till they drop in Westfield London for 4 hours using the VIP Westfield discount (eligible with every KidZania ticket purchase).
