Amsterdam Central Library

As the weather starts to cool down noticeably here in the Northern Hemisphere and Winter fast approaches, it is the perfect time to start discovering some of the lovely indoor spaces available to families in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Central Library, situated an easy walking distance from the Central Station, contains a beautiful and large space for children to enjoy and is a perfect spot where you and your little ones can escape the cold, wind and rain.

There is a large collection of books for children of all ages (including a section in English) and plenty of fun seating and couches to get comfortable in and enjoy your favourite books. If your children are a little younger and more active there is a play area set up for toddlers that features a tipi tent and some fun toys, where they can use up that extra energy. There are also different sculptures representing some fun characters from well known Dutch children’s books, a viewing platform children can climb up to, and an exhibition space where there are often sweet artworks on display.

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of a visit to the Central library though (even for adults!) is seeing Het Muizenhuis (The Mouse Mansion), a spectacular mouse doll house that has been built with such intricate detail that you can easily lose track of time observing all of the tiny and sweet features in each of its many rooms. The Mouse Mansion is filled with the everyday lives and activities of the different families of mice that occupy it. So detailed are the scenes within that there are even a series of books about the different mice characters through which children can become further immersed in this sweet little world.

Materials required are surprisingly basic and very simple to put together — such a perfect family project for the Winter!
