Bontemps – delicious pastries in the Marais

Located on rue de Bretagne, not far from Marché des Enfants Rouges, Bontemps is one of those places you enter and like everything you see! The family run pastry shop is small and sweet with a clean aesthetic and beautiful patterns all over. Their own patterns adorn the walls and a beautiful tiled floor gives the shop a little twist.

Pastries are presented on flowery vintage china, cake stands and bell jars. A cute blue cabinet filled with the later looks like taken straight out of a dollhouse and blown up to human size. It makes you feel a little like Alice in Wonderland!

What makes Bontemps so wonderful are of course the utterly delicious and so, so beautiful pastries! Fiona and Fatina, the two sisters behind the brand, create little wonders on a daily basis. Just look at how beautiful each and every little pie or cake looks: the level of detail in their work really is mind-blowing! Wait until you taste them! I still recall the scrumptious chocolate hazelnut pie and a pear tartlet gone too fast…!

Bontemps’ pastries are made of a shortbread base, covered with delicate creams or tender chocolate and topped off with fresh fruits, roughly ground nuts or almonds. The bigger pies come either as one piece or, as a cleverly already divided pie that looks like one petal-shaped pie but is really 6 individual pieces. How genius! No more destroying a beautiful pastry when cutting it for your guests, or family!

Bite-sized tartlets are a great option to taste all kinds of flavors without having to buy and eat as many different bigger pies. Although it is really tempting to do so!

The shortbread is also available as little round biscuits that sell like hot cake, if I may say so! I have tasted them in the shop but have never been able to buy a box… they are delicious! Be quick or order a box a few days in advance if you want to make sure to get some. Owner Fiona explained that their soft and especially crumbly texture is ideal for smaller children.

You will leave the shop with beautiful packaging too: the boxes and bags are printed in beautiful geometrical and flowery patterns in appealing yet discreet colors. They make for the perfect hostess gift or birthday present for a dear friend.
