After a year long renovation we have just moved our furniture back in to our nearly finished home and with it came our treasured box of craft supplies just in time for Valentines Day. My kids love to give out Valentine’s cards to their friends at school and for the past few years we’ve made these simple painted Valentine’s hearts.
The great thing about this project is that the whole process is fun, simple and so effective and you can make a big batch of cards in one go. By the end of our craft session our entire kitchen table is covered with pretty, colourful hearts, we call it our love production line. It’s really so simple, anyone can have a go! Here’s how:
You will need:
- A4 Watercolour paper
- A4 white card
- Bleeding tissue paper in assorted colours (it must be bleeding or it won’t work) you can buy here.
- Heart shaped cookie cutters, assorted sizes – or you can just draw freehand hearts if you don’t have any lying around.
- Paintbrushes
- Scissors
- Water
- Glue – we used PVA but any kind would work fine.
Start by roughly tearing pieces of tissue paper. The pieces can be any size or shape but bear in mind that bigger pieces give a faster coverage. Once you have a good assortment of colours begin laying them onto the watercolour paper, sticking each one down with a wet paint brush as you go. Paint the water carefully over each piece making sure that you go right to the edges. As you paint over the tissue paper you will see the colour begin to bleed into the paper beneath, this is a good sign. The bad news is that the wet tissue paper can also stain your fingers or anything it comes into contact with for that matter so best to lay some newspaper down if you want to protect your table. Luckily our table is slate and seems to withstand everything we throw at it! If the tissue paper doesn’t completely stick to the watercolour paper then add more water to the brush, you want the pieces to be moist but not drenched.
Once the entire sheet is covered leave to dry for a few minutes and then slowly peel off the layers of tissue paper. If you feel that the colour underneath is not strong enough you can brush another layer of water over and leave to dry again. When all the tissue paper has been removed you should be left with a beautiful picture filled with colourful, painterly swirls.
At this point I’m always torn, the painting seems far too pretty to cut up into pieces but the next part is fun too. Draw around the heart shaped cookie cutters with a pencil to create lots of different sized hearts over the picture. Next cut them out, you might need to give little ones a helping hand to cut around the lines but I actually think the wonkier, less perfect hearts are even more charming. Once you have covered your table in heart shaped confetti you can begin arranging them onto folded cards in any pattern you like. Then simply glue into place and send with love…
I find it wonderful to see how different my kids paintings turned out and I love that each of their handmade cards are totally unique. They can’t wait for February 14th to arrive!
