Just around the corner from trendy Bermondsey Street in South East London is Maltby Street, a small unassuming stretch of victorian railway arches that at the weekend transforms into a bustling food market. Although much smaller than nearby Borough Market (read more here) it still manages to pack in an impressive selection of high quality, food and drink stalls. Its smaller scale also means fewer crowds making it much more manageable with kids.
Maltby Street began life back in 2009 when Monmouth Coffee decided to open up it’s warehouse to the public for a couple of hours every Saturday, Neals Yard Dairy then followed with a cheese stall outside and soon word spread about this unique food destination. Today you will find some of the finest purveyors of artisan food nestled in amongst the arches and on neighbouring Druid Street. Strung overhead are an eye-catching array of ropes and colourful flags with tables and chairs spilling out onto the walkway. The buzz here is lively rather than overwhelming but you’ll need to arrive early to bag yourself a seat at one of the stalls.
There are so many delicious foods to try that a trip to Maltby Street has become a bit of a weekend ritual for us. We love the grilled cheese sandwiches from The Cheese Truck, wraps from Maltby and Greek, mouthwatering burgers from African Volcano and of course custard doughnuts from the St John Bakery around the corner in Druid Street. We also recently discovered Milo and Hector’s deliciously indulgent Ice cream sandwiches which were obviously a huge hit with the kids.
You’ll find plenty of refreshments on offer such as juices, craft beers, and fun jam jar cocktails at the 40’s inspired Little Bird Gin bar. There are also some fantastic fair-trade coffee stalls such as Beanbag Coffee which serves a great iced coffee in a bag!
The North End of the street is home to one of my favourite shops, Lassco architectural salvage. This quirky warehouse is filled with all manner of vintage furniture, artworks, toys and eclectic odds and ends. It’s a must for any antique/vintage furniture lovers. Sadly the days of picking up a bargain here are long gone but you’ll find some beautiful one off pieces and a wander around is an experience in itself. They also serve lunch and dinner at their new restaurant Ropewalk Dining Room hosted by pop up Disappearing Dining Club – check website for up to date details.
