Travel memories captured with Little Square Gallery

As much as I promised myself I would take more photos with my ‘proper’ camera this year, the reality is that an iPhone is just too easy! I’ve tried to use my camera to capture the beautiful scenery and sights along our journey, but my iPhone is what I end up using for quick snaps of our family life and happy moments throughout the day… which means that I end up with a lot of cute family photos sitting in my camera roll on my phone only to be buried beneath newer photos as they come in. Of course I share some photos on Instagram, but even these photos get forgotten down the feed as new ones are shared.

A couple months ago, while we were in Australia, I decided I wanted to do something with all these photos on my phone — something bigger than simply ordering another Instagram photo book — and that’s when I remembered the beautiful commissioned pieces from Little Square Gallery. It is the perfect way to capture and display my favourite little square photos from our travels!

I reached out to Natalie, the owner of Little Square Gallery, to chat about the process, and before I knew it, I was choosing my photos to send over for a 48 Little Squares piece – the biggest framed gallery in her collection.

For my part, the job was easy. All I had to do was narrow down my favourite photos and then wait until I had strong enough wifi (from my base in Sri Lanka!) to send them over to Natalie. She then took care of the rest – choosing the final selection of photos, deciding how to display them so they look best in a grid, and then helping to edit the photos so they all look good together with similar exposure and contrast.

The photos are displayed in a series of little square giclée prints, individually mounted onto art board against a white backdrop to create a subtle floating effect of the prints. The result is a beautiful collection of photos that individually stand out in the frame. iPhone photos have never looked so good!

I didn’t tell Michael or the kids about the gallery, so you can imagine the surprise when it arrived this week. The kids were SO excited to see all these happy photos from our travels — such sweet reminders of our time together and all the sunny places we’ve been this year.

We have now spent time looking at each photo, talking about where we were and what we loved about each place. I’m reluctant to hand these experiences over to memory just yet – they still feel so ingrained in us, so a part of spirit and adventure. But I know as time goes on and memories start to fade, we will be so thankful to have this special keepsake to treasure forever.
