Dr Jackson’s Natural Skin Care

Blog-Image
When the lovely Luisa from Niko and Ava told me about Dr Jackson at our LA ShopUp and described him (and I quote) as the “Indiana Jones” of skincare, I was more than intrigued.

drj_26_1024x1024

She very kindly sent me some of Dr Jackson’s products to test and now I am not intrigued anymore. I am addicted! Dr Jackson’s only uses pure natural ingredients which he has discovered on his travels all over the world. He has spent years testing the right mixtures for his creams and tinctures. I love the fact that when you look at the ingredients they are all plant products – nothing else.

drj_4_1024x1024-1

The research has been worth it – the products are simply amazing. I especially love the Facial oil which I have been putting on at night and facial wash, which is refreshing and gentle and, very importantly, removes all the Parisian grime off my face. Also, how lovely do these bottles look?

Darling Dotty Dungarees

Dotty Dungarees

I love dungarees on little children. They are just so cute to look at, and so practical for crawling babies, trotting toddlers or climbing kids! They are easy to layer, making them ideal to wear all year round. The one clothing item I have continuously dressed my children in for the past 10 years, passing them on from sibling to sibling, has been dungarees.

Dotty Dungarees is a London based brand that solely focusses on dungarees: dungaree trousers, dungaree dresses, and dungaree shorts. So you can imagine they have really perfected the dungaree as such. First of all, I love the slightly wide cut. Very cute, both for boys and girls. I also like how the straps are adjustable for longer wear, and how the sweet turn-ups reveal the darling dots of the soft jersey lining. And for smaller sizes (up to 24 months), the legs open up for easy nappy changes with a zipper! So clever!

The stories of Fiep Westendorp on Storytiles

storytiles, fiep westendorp
Fiep Westendorp is a name that all Dutch people know. She was the sweet lady who so creatively illustrated the famous stories of the late Annie MG Schmidt, one of the Netherlands’ most famous children book writers. Fiep Westendorp came up with the clever silhouettes of Jip and Janneke, and is as responsible for their fame as Annie M.G. Schmidt was. Millions of children grew up with Fiep’s darling and characteristic drawings. I did! And so do my children.

Story tiles
Seeing Fiep’s work makes me happy! Marga and Judith, the two pretty sisters behind the decorative Dutch tile brand Storytiles clearly thought so too, because they collaborated with the Fiep Westendorp Foundation to create a series of tiles celebrating Fiep’s 100th birthday.

Storytiles give old tiles a new life with sweet, funny collages. Tiles are traditionally baked in Holland, so a very very Dutch product, full of tradition but with a modern swing. With the cute characters of Fiep Westendorp, Storytiles tell an even Dutcher story. So cute for the kids room!

Thursday Thoughts: Depression during pregnancy

This past April, in Australia, I went out to dinner with some new girl friends. Our conversation that night became quite intimate and over the course of dinner I learned of one friend’s struggle with pregnancy depression. She shared, so eloquently, her struggle and journey to get support during her recent pregnancy. For the first time I found someone who I could open up to about my own experience with pregnancy depression. While I had spoken about it with close friends and family, this was the first time I could speak to someone who could completely relate. Her vivid accounts of her depression brought back memories of my own, and we found comfort in knowing that we weren’t alone with those struggles.

She drove me home that night and we discussed how pregnancy depression is so rarely spoken about – how it seems to be taboo – to be sad during what should be such a happy time of your life. I promised her that I would work up the courage to write about it. I’ve decided to share my personal experiences here to normalise something that, I’ve now learned, is not uncommon but is still rarely discussed.

I was 23 when I became pregnant with Easton. I was young, carefree and madly in love with Michael. I felt incredibly lucky to have found someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, to be starting a family and becoming a mother–a role that felt so natural to me having grown up with lots of younger siblings. I could not have been happier or more excited for what was to come.

And then, within weeks of becoming pregnant, I started having thoughts and feelings I had never experienced before. A wave of anxiety took hold of me, tightening its grip over my mind. For the first time in my life I could not control the thoughts that entered my head or shake the darkness out of my mind. I started thinking about death and how everyone I know will die some day. I obsessed about my grandparents and how they were getting older and how their lives would soon end. I couldn’t pass elderly people, even strangers, without feeling a tightening in my heart and tears welling up in my eyes. I thought about my own life and the new life I was creating. I thought about the generations of people who came before us and how there would be generations to come after us – the world so enormous and life so insignificant. I became so obsessed with these dark thoughts that I wasn’t able to find joy in the everyday life I was living. To add to this, I started feeling incredibly guilty – worried my thoughts would have a negative impact on my baby. I fretted that I was ruining the joy of pregnancy for both Michael and myself.

I soon started worrying about Michael, obsessing about something terrible happening to him. I cried when he left for work every day with terrible, tragic scenarios playing out in my head. I tried to speak to Michael about it but I couldn’t even begin to explain it, and he couldn’t possibly understand. I wished I could play my thoughts on a projector for him, so that he could reassure me and tell me how silly they were.

A friend once told me that depression is a bit like staring at the sun. You know it’s not good for you. You know it will burn your eyes. But you can’t look away. The anxiety I experienced during pregnancy was exactly like this – I had thoughts running through my head that made me incredibly sad and worried, and yet I couldn’t turn away from them.

I remember towards the end of pregnancy, I was sitting with Michael on a train up to Edinburgh. We were headed to Scotland for a fun work retreat with Michael’s colleagues. I was 35 weeks pregnant, so close to meeting our baby. I sat on the train, staring out at the English countryside quickly passing us by… and I started to panic. What was wrong with me? Why was I feeling this way? What if these feelings never went away? Or even worse, what if they got worse once the baby is born? I was aware of postpartum depression and worried that I might be affected by it. How could I be a decent mother if I was so sad and so emotionally unstable? Tears rolled down my cheeks as I stared out of that train, trying my hardest to pull myself together – trying to focus on something else, to think happy thoughts, to stop staring at the sun!

Five weeks later Easton was born on a sunny June day, right on time. After a long labour he arrived quickly and beautifully, and his perfect tiny body was placed on my chest. Instantly, almost unbelievably, as if my mind had been simultaneously purged of its negative thoughts as I pushed my baby out, my mind returned to normal. Thoughts, both happy and sad, would come and go in the same normal, healthy way they did before I became pregnant. I felt joy like I’ve never felt in my life and, of course, immense relief to have control over my thoughts again. It is a testament to the power of hormones that a switch inside your mind can be triggered on with pregnancy and immediately switched off at pregnancy’s end.

When I was pregnant with Easton I did not know that depression or anxiety could take place during pregnancy. I had heard about postpartum depression, but nobody had ever spoken about antenatal depression. I didn’t even think to look it up at the time. I just thought there was something wrong with me. And being a young, expectant mother in a new city, I didn’t have many friends to share my feelings with.

I experienced anxiety again when I became pregnant with Quin, but while I was affected with dark thoughts and feelings similar to those in my first pregnancy, I thankfully had the perspective and experience to assure myself that they were transient– that it would all go away when my baby was born. This basic understanding helped me to manage my depression during those nine months and again with Quin’s birth, my mind and emotional state returned to normal as soon as he was born. Again, I was awed by the power of hormones and gained a deeper understanding and sympathy for those who suffer from postpartum depression or depression of any kind.

One week after speaking with my friend about her antenatal depression, I had a conversation with another friend who said her sister had also suffered severe depression during her pregnancy. It seemed the more I mentioned it, the more common I found it to be. I hope this post will start a conversation about a topic seldom discussed. Please share your thoughts and tell us if you’ve ever experienced depression before, during or after pregnancy and what helped you through this difficult time. As with so many aspects of the parenting journey, it is invaluable to learn from the experiences of other mothers and support each other along the way.

Mabo_Tatum_0081_1024x1024

It’s no secret that Mabo Kids is one of my very favourite children’s clothing brands. Mabo is a household name in our family and the designer/founder, Emily, a wonderful friend.  The clothing is both incredibly sweet and easy to wear as well as durable and extremely well made.

The rompers, for example, are not only incredibly cute – but they have three different button holes on the back straps, so they grow with your child and last for a long time (usually two years in our case). The pinafore dresses are perfect for all seasons – worn on their own in the summer, or paired over shirts and tights in the winter. Ivy has had the same pinafore wrap dress for three years and it’s definitely the most versatile item she owns. And the organic cotton basics are so soft and thick — they can’t be beaten for their quality.

The new collection is my favourite one yet. And Emily has just designed the most gorgeous t-strap leather shoes which compliment her timeless clothing perfectly. Cuteness overload!

Why I like camping

Campers

When I mention camping to a lot of my friends, they look aghast. The idea of sleeping on the ground, in a tiny tent on top of each other without privacy and at the mercy of the elements, does not sound like a relaxing holiday. To a certain extent they are right; waking up in the morning and hearing the rain splash down on the tent is not the most pleasant of things, but camping is so much more.

The reason I like it so much is because of the freedom. Everything is stripped down and simple and we have so much more free time. As the only way to cook is a little gas ring, food preparation becomes something of a matter of minutes and, at the end, there is only one pan and a couple of plates to clean. There is no house to tidy and no space to get messy and everything is done outdoors. Such a change from Parisian apartment living.

IMG_0478

France is also the ideal place to go camping. There are so many camp sites in stunning locations and if you don’t like where you are, you can just fold up your tent and move on. There are also always interesting things to visit, like chateaux and museums so if the weather does turn, there are places to escape to.

Orangina

We have explored the Dordogne in a camper van and stayed on a campsite in the Loire Valley with Esther and her family. I do think our favourite location is on the Atlantic coast around Arcachon and further to the south. It has the perfect combination of sea, surf and sand, great food and (normally) great weather.

IMG_0358

If you have any recommendation on campsites and camping, I would love to hear! I am currently planning our summer adventure…

Flyaway, Illustrated by Lesley Barnes

Flyaway

readingFlyaway is one of those pretty picture books which every time you open up you discover something else on the page. The detailing is so intricate and fascinating it has children of all ages captivated.

Illustrated by the talented Lesley Barnes who has shown at film festivals worldwide with her incredible animations and has won numerous awards with her divine illustrations. Her first book Jill and Dragon was an equally uplifting story which we love too and when you see some of her work here you can see how this is such a wonderfully complex book.

counting keysThe story goes that a princess captures a bird which she keeps trapped in a cage until one day it manages to escape. The princess continues to chase the bird around the castle until she realises it wants to be set free. And it’s on each double page that perfectly detailed sceens of the castle are shown and you are asked to find 10 pears, or 10 horns etc.

There is so much to this book – it’s a counting book, a concept book and it has a beautifully thoughtful story. It’s no wonder Florence is absorbed each afternoon with it.

Niko + Ava, a boutique full of special fashion finds

Niko+Ava7

At the beginning of the year, when Emilie and I were visiting the Playtime trade-show in Paris, we bumped into a beautiful, pregnant lady called Luisa, and her handsome husband and darling little boy Niko. We instantly had a click (you know how you sometimes have that with people?) and we became friends on the spot. Louise told us she had just launched an online children’s fashion shop together with her business partner Kelly (mum of Ava and Liv), and of course we exchanged business cards. When we got home and checked the boutique, we were so impressed — Niko + Ava just offers the most beautifully curated collection of kids fashion!

I love seeing gorgeous selections of some of my favourite brands (and some new to me), all mixed up and brought together in one place at Niko + Ava. Page after page is filled with the most adorable and special fashion finds, both for little boys as girls (sizing goes up to age 6 at the moment). There is even an exciting section of very want-able things for mamas and dadas (I can, BTW, recommend the sunglasses, I have had a pair of this brand for over a year and love them!). Many of the gorgeous clothing items in the mama selection are also available in girls’ sizing. So cute!

Last week Ava was picking flowers in the beautiful, wild garden of my parents-in-law, and she was wearing a summer outfit that Luisa styled especially for her. I love the way she mixed and matched brands, the way she does so beautifully for Niko + Ava as well. She chose a top in a super special linen/cotton blend and with a special, different cut, designed and made in Taiwan by Once. The shorts in a gold-coloured linnen are from Paade, a brand that we’ve been admiring and following for years and we’re so happy to see them in the Niko + Ava collection! Then she included the most beautiful flowery espadrilles from Sonatina (they come in adult sizing too!) and magical leather hair clips that can be used as a brooch too — again, from Paade.

At the ShopUp in LA last month, we met Luisa and her family again, which was so great! Niko + Ava had a beautiful stand there, and it was so nice to see some European brands that we love represented there. Anyway — I hope you enjoy discovering the collections at his pretty shop!

Feather Down Farms: a weekend stay on a farm

FeatherDownFarm7
FeatherDownFarm6

A couple of weeks back, we picked up the children from school on a Friday afternoon and drove all the way to the very south of Belgium. Reason for our trip was a weekend stay at a Feather Down farm, or in other words, we were going ‘glamping’ on a real working farm.

Feather Down is a concept that originated in the Netherlands (where it is called ‘Boerenbed‘), and for years already I had been toying with the idea of going. The idea is so simple, and so cool: offering people the chance to re-discover ‘simple living’ by staying in a ‘tenthouse’ with no electricity and hot water (except for the shower — this is clamping after all), encouraging them to rewind, to slow down. Plus, giving them the chance to actively experience farm life; to physically work on a farm, alongside the farmers, to put their muscles to work and get their hands dirty.

After our arrival at the farm in Belgium in the evening, we immediately stepped in the mud, and of course the bag with wellies was left forgotten on the doorstep back in Amsterdam. But we were welcomed warmly by the farmer’s wife who, herself a mother of three children, quickly provided us with proper footwear in a variety of sizes. Then, we transported our suitcases in the wheelbarrow (which we were handed for this purpose) to the tenthouse, which looked terrific, but was freezing! No central heating and no electricity — we were lucky to arrive before sunset so we could see what we were doing. But an hour or so later, the candles and oil lamps were providing a cosy light, and the fire was roaring in the wood burning stove.

feather down farms

After a fairly comfortable night (although we did get a bit chilly!), Saturday morning started with a breakfast we had ordered from the farmer’s wife the evening before. She baked her own bread, and together with fresh milk from her cows, fresh eggs from her hens, homemade jam from her garden and drip coffee we made on our stove, we had a copious breakfast. Which was a needed source of energy, because we were going to sample a tast of farm life immediately after breakfast!

FeatherDownFarm4
FeatherDownFarm5
FeatherDownFarm3

The coming hours we tended to the animals — feeding them, adding fresh straw, and giving a bottle to the lambs and calves who had lost their mums or had trouble nursing. All of this is the job of the farmer’s wife, while her husband is out on the fields, taking care of the even heavier labour.

FeatherDownFarm10
FeatherDownFarm11
FeatherDownFarm12
FeatherDownFarm25

I thought it was interesting to see that the looks of this working farm are perhaps not picture perfect, but after having spent time working alongside the farmwife for a bit, one quickly sees that the welfare of the animals is what is of the utmost importance. It is so much work to take care of them! The work really never stops, and I quickly understood that there is simply no time to keep things more than functionally tidy or pretty. And actually, a bit of mud is a lot of fun, and the surrounding fields and wild spring flowers growing in little corners are so pretty.

FeatherDownFarm14
FeatherDownFarm15
FeatherDownFarm13
FeatherDownFarm19

The tent-houses, which are apparently always the same at all the Feather Down farms, are tastefully designed, with walls made of fruit crates, zinc countertops, copper taps, and enamel kitchenware. There are proper beds with duvets, a comfortable couch, and lovely antique chairs around the wooden table. Outside, each tent is equipped with a picnic table and a couple of lounge chairs. Everything is really well thought through, and even though you are meant to live a simple life here, you are equipped with all the means to do so comfortably.

FeatherDownFarm23
FeatherDownFarmC2
FeatherDownFarmC1
FeatherDownFarm24

We also helped to milk the cows, which is a nearly 3 hour job that takes place twice a day. The farmer’s wife really involved us in the process — we were actively milking cows here, checking the quality of the milk, cleaning and disinfecting the nipples, operating the milk machines… (Sara and Pim became quick pros and even ran the operation themselves for a little while!)

FeatherDownFarm20
FeatherDownFarm21
featherdown-milking
IMG_9261

How fun was this day full of labour — we were all so hungry. After we lit the fire, we cooked a simple bean dish on the wood burning stove that I used to love as a child. A one-pot dish which only needs a few ingredients: diced bacon fried with onions, mixed with canned brown beans, brought to taste only with a bit of pepper and served with a side of apple compote. We all devoured it.

FeatherDownFarm26

The Feather Down Farm tents are set up in the middle of the fields, so it’s a true outdoor experience. Waking up in the morning in the middle of dew covered fields is so romantic, and it was relaxing to hang out on the field, where there’s a simple wooden swing and slide set up but is otherwise left empty.

FeatherDownFarm27
FeatherDownFarm16
FeatherDownFarm17
FeatherDownFarm32
FeatherDownFarm31
FeatherDownFarm33

Being outside the entire day, helping alongside the farmer’s wife and cooking on a wood burning stove (which means making a pot of tea or coffee takes close to an hour) made us forget the rush of city living very quickly. Tamar chopped wood, we milked cows, cuddled lambs, calves and kittens, washed the pretty enamel dishes by hand (first we heated water on the stove, of course), we trotted through the mud and demure, we ate hearty and simple, tasty food. We definitely unwound and spent great quality time together, but what I loved most is that the children got a true tast of farm living, the hardship and the wonders of it!

FeatherDownFarm30
FeatherDownFarm29
FeatherDownFarm28

There are now Feather Down farms in America, South Africa, France and Germany besides the ones in the Netherlands and Belgium.  We definitely would love to go again!
