Fenton House in leafy Hampstead is a stunning 17th Century mansion and walled garden owned by the National Trust. It is one of London’s most charming and idyllic spots, a perfect peaceful hideaway to escape the city.

The house itself contains lots of interesting decorative objects including porcelain, needleworks and early keyboards all collected by its last owner Lady Binning. If you venture all the way to the top of the house you can see far reaching views across the city from the balcony. But it is without a doubt the dreamy 300-year-old walled gardens with their secluded corners and tranquil ambience that bring us back to this special place time and time again.

This past bank holiday we decided to make an impromptu visit for an afternoon stroll around the gardens. Having been many times during the spring and witnessed the impressive blossoms and pretty spring bulbs I was keen to catch the summer roses in full bloom… and what a treat it turned out to be. Not only were the gardens looking beautiful, brimming with colour and heady scents, but there were also a number of family friendly activities laid on especially for younger visitors.

The croquet and giant snakes and ladders were an instant hit with the kids and there were also story telling fairies, balloon animals and to top it off delicious homemade cakes for sale! We sampled quite a few cakes and stayed much longer than expected despite the odd thunder shower.

Fenton House run regular family based activities during bank holidays and special occasions such as their famous Easter Egg Trail, Apple Weekend and musical performances. You will also find food stalls and lawn games at various times throughout the summer. Check the website for further details and entrance fees.
