Documenting our trip around the world with Bob Books photobooks

It is no secret I am a big fan of photobooks. I have photobooks for each of my children’s first years of life. I also have photobooks of favourite holidays and summer vacations from the past twelve years. One of our favourites is our ‘100 Days Away’ photo book from our big trip to Australia 7 years ago, which I created with Bob Books (look how little my kids are in those photos!). It’s so fun to look back at all of these books — I often find the kids sitting together looking through the books and reminiscing on memories they have. That’s the thing I love about photobooks — they help to cement memories, and unlike online albums, they can be pulled off the shelf and viewed as a shared experience whenever you (or your kids) wish.

So it was only a matter of time before I sat down to create a photobook of our recent big trip around the world. It’s been on my list of things to do since last year when we finished travelling and moved to Australia. This wonderful trip had to be properly documented! Of course I turned to Bob Books again. I wanted to create a book similar to the last book we made with them the last time so the two books could sit on the shelf together.

I decided to break the book up by destination and to go in the same order as our trip. So the book starts in California and ends with photos of our time in Portugal. It helped that I had kept individual folders of photos from each destination so our photos were already organised and ready to be uploaded.

In my experience of making these books, I have found that the more simple the design and layout, the easier it is to make the book and the more likely it is I will get around to doing it. So I tend not to have too much text on the pages — to eliminate the extra work of thinking what to write! I also feel like the images do the speaking, so not much text is needed (but of course, if you feel inspired, you can always include text).  I labeled our book with destinations, but apart from that, the book is image-based. I also opted for white pages and a matte finish — options easily selected during the design process.

The result is a beautiful, high quality book we will cherish forever. It is a celebration of the best year of our lives, a year of adventure and togetherness. Every single page of this book brings back the happiest memories for us all, and already we’ve spent so much time pouring over the pages of this book.
