1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself, where you live and about your family.

I am a designer, artist, and an entrepreneur living in Dumbo, Brooklyn, also home my brand’s flagship store. You can find me there at Dumbo Baby on most weekends!

I grew up in Long Island and my parents are still there. It was great growing up in Long Island because you get the best of both worlds — being close to the city with its rich cultural offerings as well as living in a home with a backyard and pets. I take after my parents in their entrepreneurial spirit. They courageously came to the States from South Korea many years ago and started to build a life and home here.

2.Tell us a little bit about your brand and how you came to create your label.

I graduated from Parsons School of Design and worked in the industry for a while, at one point working at Tommy Hilfiger designing childrenswear. I’ve always been interested in children’s products. My friends were having kids and talking about their needs and the kind of styles that appeal to them. Galileo Linens was created with my friends in mind; all of them own a nursing cover or a baby wrap – whether they have kids or not – because it’s just such a beautiful product in its own right!

My brand uses fair trade hemp linen, organic cotton, and linen and specialises in baby gear such as woven baby carrier wraps, ring slings and nursing covers, as well as an assortment of blankets.

All of our products come in a kraft paper box complete with a silver foil letterpress of the star Orion by Galileo himself! I choose Galileo as part of our brand name because he’s a man I admire – a true renaissance man an astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher, and mathematician – he saw beyond everyone else.

3. Your parents work with you on Galileo Linens, that’s so lovely! How do you collaborate?

My dad retired recently and my mom is semi-retired, working part time for the church as a visiting minister. Coincidentally, at the same time my dad retired I wanted to incorporate the use of natural dyes in Galileo Linens. I was taking classes myself to further my knowledge, when I thought about asking my parents if they would be interested in being part of it. They absolutely were, and as they have a lot of space in their Long Island home they converted part of it into an art and dye studio and now do all of the natural botanical dying themselves!

It’s great working with my parents as they care about the products so much and are close by. They are now in Korea vacationing and sourcing traditional Korean dye methods. As a family business, our work is our life.

4. What is important to you when creating your products?

As someone working in the fashion industry I am very aware of environmental concerns and issues – that is why we incorporate fair trade fabrics and natural dyes. We use fair trade hemp linen because this means that the fabric company is operating ethically and empowering their employees by paying them fair wages.

Hemp is also a sustainable plant, requiring less water and soil to grow, and doing so without depleting nutrients in the soil. Organic cotton is also similar in that it has a low impact on the environment, replenishing and maintaining soil fertility and reducing the use of toxic pesticides and fertilisers.

Conventional cotton is one of the most widely grown crops in the world and also one of the most chemical-¬intensive, involving some of the most toxic chemicals as classified by the Environmental Protection Agency.

It made sense to me to use ethical and sustainable fabrics. We use commercial grade dyes as well as natural botanical dyes from plants and trees. The process of dying with natural dyes take us around 3-5 days, working in batches in of around a dozen items. It is time intensive and really a labour of love. The foundation of our products comes from truly caring about people around us

I love that my job is mine by choice and I love how free that feels!
