A trip to Morocco — in the Amsterdam Tropenmuseum!

We just came back from a trip to Morocco — and it only took us a few hours! We went to the beautiful Tropenmuseum here in Amsterdam, where we boarded a plane to Marrakesh and entered a medina of little streets and rooms to discover.

Before the departure of the ‘plane’, the children were handed a Moroccan passport with questions and assignments aimed to give direction to the interactive ‘Ziezo Marokko’ exhibition. There are four tours to be discovered, ‘guided’ by Esmaa, Fatima, Nasrdin or Yousef, who take you by the hand to discover the land of their parents. According to true Moroccan fashion, guests are welcomed with a glass of the traditional, sweet mint tea before they are left to explore the Medina by themselves.

The exhibition explores Moroccan culture like architecture, music, religion, scripture, dress, food and arts and crafts. It’s an excellent way to show children some of this amazing country. (Our visit to Morocco a few years ago was one of our favourite trips ever!)

In the main hall of the Tropenmuseum children can work on a gigantic mosaic puzzle (which my kids loved!) and on selected days in the Christmas vacation there’s henna tattooing and Moroccan style photography. Check the website for details — it’s such a fun outing during the holidays!

PS All the tours are in Dutch, but I feel that with some knowledge of Moroccan culture, or if you’ve been to Morocco before, parents can easily take non-Dutch speaking children around to give them a taste of this beautiful country.

Christmas in Australia…

The other day I was in the grocery store and I saw a big banner with an image of sliced, juicy mangos. In red Christmassy writing the banner said ‘The Taste of Christmas’. I had to stop myself from giggling. Having spent all of my life in the northern hemisphere, the taste of Christmas is sugar cookies, and gingerbread, roast turkey and cranberry sauce. Not mangos or prawns or cold salads. But alas… it is sunny and hot, and I’ve never been one to complain about that. Not even at Christmas time. Also, we all really love mangos and they’re so good at this time of year.

While it feels slightly odd to hang wool Christmas stockings and snowflake decorations, and while the majority of our Christmas music doesn’t apply to this sunny climate (no white Christmases or sleigh rides), and while it’s really too hot to bake cookies… I feel obliged to cling to the traditions of my childhood. So we try.

We hung up our Advent calendar on December 1st, filled with tiny little goodies and treats. I gathered all of our Christmas books and stacked them up for the kids to read. We don’t have a fireplace, so we hung our stockings in the doorway — all seven of them! I ordered my Christmas crackers from Hedgehog Shop like I do every year. And I even bought a Panetone, which came all the way from Italy! Some traditions can’t be broken.

I thought I’d share some festive scenes from around our home to give you a glimpse of our Australian Christmas…

  • Our stockings are from Sundance Catalog — hand knit by artisans in Bosnia. I ordered Wilkie’s stocking a couple months ago and it makes a perfect addition.
  • Our Advent Calendar is an old one by Maileg (I’m not sure if it’s available anymore). I saw some cute ones at the Scandi Mini booth at the ShopUp in London if you’re looking for something similar.
  • The red and white gingham Christmas crackers are from Hedgehog Shop
  • The wooden christmas tree decoration is an old one from Muji, which we’ve had for nearly 10 years now (Esther and I bought them together in London!).
  • My mom bought us our wooden Christmas pyramid in Austria several years ago. You can find similar ones online here. (We have realised that it doesn’t work here in humid Australia because the heat from the candles doesn’t make the top spin — I guess you need a colder room for that to work. Also, our candles are melting and starting to tilt!)
  • Here’s a post with many of our family’s favourite Christmas books as well as our Team’s Favourite Christmas books.

I’m so looking forward to slow, sunny Christmas days ahead with my family. I hope you all have a restful, joyful, merry holiday season wherever in the world you are.

Hortense and the Shadow, by Natalia and Lauren O’Hara

Hortense and the Shadow is the debut picture book by sisters Natalia and Lauren O’Hara. Older sister Natalia writes and Lauren, who is three years younger, illustrates. The two grew up in the north of England and their love of sharing stories dates from their childhood when Natalia, who is dyslexic, struggled at school and finally learned to read by reading aloud to her younger sister. Natalia then went on to read English at Oxford and Cambridge while her younger sister went on to study illustration and fine arts. They’ve joined forces for the first time in this beautiful contemporary fairytale which draws on the classic picture books and fables the sisters loved as children. Such a sweet story — you almost know the book will be good before you open it up!

The story follows Hortense, a small girl who lives in a big wood. She is kind and brave and clever, but… she hates her shadow. It follows her everywhere, and every time night falls, it grows tall and dark and crooked. Hortense decides her shadow must go! But then later, alone in the snowy woods, she discovers that a girl without a shadow is far smaller and she realises she needs her shadow after all. The story ends with an empowering message of girl power when Hortense’s shadow saves her from bandits.

With a strong female protagonist and an empowering message, this is a wonderful new fairytale perfect for little girls (and boys too, for that matter).

And I didn’t even mention the beautiful illustrations! You can see from the pictures that no words are needed. : )

A wonderful wintery story, perfect for this time of year. Available from all good bookstores and online at Amazon (UK and US) and Booktopia here in Australia.

The Anne Frank house, a visit with Sara

anne frank house

Anne Frank is a name that is familiar to most if not all. Her world-famous diary is translated to more than 60 languages worldwide, and the story of her family hiding in Amsterdam during WWII is universally known. We can all envision the photos of Anne’s sweet face, showing a girl on the verge of adolescence.

I remember reading the diary when I was a teenager. It captivated me; I felt Anne was a friend — it even (briefly) inspired me to start my own diary. I also remember visiting the famous ‘Achterhuis’ (the secret annexe) around that time, giving more spatial context to the rooms Anne so vividly described in her book. Anne’s writings deeply affected me on all sorts of levels.

A few months ago, at the end of Sara’s last year at primary school, I took her to visit the Anne Frank House. Even though we live in Amsterdam and a visit is quite easily arranged, I purposely waited until she was twelve years old. I feel a visit is in place when you’ve reached the age you can actually read (and understand!) Anne Frank’s famous diary, and grasp the actual meaning of a visit to the Achterhuis where she once lived in hiding with her family and some friends. Anne received her diary for her thirteen birthday, and wrote in it daily until the day ‘the Achterhuis’ was betrayed in 1944 and its inhabitants were captured and deported to Auschwitz. Anne was 15.

Anne frank house

Addressing her ‘best friend’ Kitty, Anne describes life in the hiding place. She sets out the sometimes troubling interactions between the inhabitants, who live in extremely close proximity with virtually no freedom, privacy or fresh air for almost two years. (“The sun is shining, the sky is deep blue, there’s a magnificent breeze, and I’m longing – really longing– for everything: conversation, freedom, friends, being alone.”) She also deeply thinks about the political situation and about human nature (“Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart.”). But she also writes about her changing body and emotions, her budding sexuality, her first love.

Anne’s father Otto is the only one of the family who survives the concentration camps and is able return to Amsterdam after the war. He is handed Anne’s diary, which was left behind in the Achterhuis and has been kept safely by one of the family’s helpers and close friends. Otto makes sure to fulfil one of Anne’s deepest wishes and her diary is eventually published. The Anne Frank House becomes a museum, a spiritual place to remember, to gather and to learn.

Wandering through the empty spaces of the Achterhuis, seeing the same view Anne and her family and friends saw for such a long period is a humbling experience.  The lack of furniture makes it a place for reflection and remembrance, it breathes respect, quiet understanding and sadness, but also hope. Anne’s hope becomes our hope, and that is the important message of the Anne Frank House, for us and for our children.

It’s not easy to understand what has happened to Anne and to our world, and what is still happening. Not for us, but especially for children. I think Sara was the right age for a visit to the Anne Frank House. She can slowly start to put everything in context now. Of course I bought her Anne’s diary in the gift shop after our visit (which she read immediately after). On our way home, we made a quick detour to the neighbourhood where Anne and her family once lived. Their apartment is still there, windows wide open, the apartment block unchanged. On the little field opposite stands a beautiful little sculpture of Anne, a perfectly sweet and silent commemoration.

Greecologies – a yogurt bar in Little Italy

Greecologies counter Preserves at the Greecologies counter Greecologies yogurts Greecologies yogurts and coffee Greecologies window Greecologies yogurt with raspberries Greecologies yogurt with figs and honey

It’s not hard at all to find Greek yogurt in most groceries and bodegas in New York, but for something a bit more special and unique, Greecologies, a yogurt lab and café in Little Italy, provides a perfect place to stop for breakfast or a mid-day snack. The shop’s signature offering is traditional small-batch Greek yogurt, made on location from the milk of grass-fed cows. Topped with one of the preserves, made in Greece specifically for the store and with flavors ranging from sour cherry, thyme honey, and bergamot to rose petal and carrot, or with items like fruit, nuts, seeds, or even vegetables for a savory take, the ceramic ramekins of yogurt are a filling and healthy treat, perfect for feeling a little indulgent.

Two styles of yogurt are available: traditional, with a creamy crust over the top and a lighter body; or strained, which is more familiar with its smooth, creamy texture and slightly tart flavor. Various topping combinations are offered on the menu – I went for one with figs, walnuts, chia seeds, and honey – but you can also create something that suits your tastes perfectly. In addition to yogurts, the menu includes smoothies, a small selection of traditional savory Greek dishes like spanakopita, grain bowls, desserts, and excellent coffees and teas.

The shop’s chic and spacious interior offers wifi and plenty of comfortable seating, and the garden out back would be the perfect place to relax in the warmer months. The windowed production area was a hit with my daughter, who loved getting a peek at where her yogurt was made. Shelves stocked with the preserves and a variety of Cretan cookies line the right-hand side of the store – perfect for dressing up your yogurt and coffee at home or giving as delicious gifts.
