It’s not hard at all to find Greek yogurt in most groceries and bodegas in New York, but for something a bit more special and unique, Greecologies, a yogurt lab and café in Little Italy, provides a perfect place to stop for breakfast or a mid-day snack. The shop’s signature offering is traditional small-batch Greek yogurt, made on location from the milk of grass-fed cows. Topped with one of the preserves, made in Greece specifically for the store and with flavors ranging from sour cherry, thyme honey, and bergamot to rose petal and carrot, or with items like fruit, nuts, seeds, or even vegetables for a savory take, the ceramic ramekins of yogurt are a filling and healthy treat, perfect for feeling a little indulgent.
Two styles of yogurt are available: traditional, with a creamy crust over the top and a lighter body; or strained, which is more familiar with its smooth, creamy texture and slightly tart flavor. Various topping combinations are offered on the menu – I went for one with figs, walnuts, chia seeds, and honey – but you can also create something that suits your tastes perfectly. In addition to yogurts, the menu includes smoothies, a small selection of traditional savory Greek dishes like spanakopita, grain bowls, desserts, and excellent coffees and teas.
The shop’s chic and spacious interior offers wifi and plenty of comfortable seating, and the garden out back would be the perfect place to relax in the warmer months. The windowed production area was a hit with my daughter, who loved getting a peek at where her yogurt was made. Shelves stocked with the preserves and a variety of Cretan cookies line the right-hand side of the store – perfect for dressing up your yogurt and coffee at home or giving as delicious gifts.
