A stones throw from busy King’s Cross station, on a quiet sun drenched piazza overlooking King’s Boulevard is Bill Granger’s latest addition to his cluster of popular all day restaurants – Granger & Co. Best known for his laid back, fresh and wholesome brunch menus, the Aussie chef is now making his mark on the London dinner scene too, with an equally tasty evening menu.

The restaurant itself is pleasingly light and airy with walls of floor to ceiling glass, perfect for people watching. There’s an air of 80’s Italian hotel lobby (but in a good way) with rose tinted marble, terrazzo, brass, abstract art and a long sweeping bar clad in the prettiest soft-pink square tiles.

So popular are the breakfast and brunch offerings here that you will often find queues at the weekends, you can’t book so arrive early if like me you aren’t good at hungry queueing. We decided to try our luck on a sunny Friday evening after spending the day at the nearby Granary Square fountains (read more here), and we are so glad we chanced it. One of the great things about going out for an early dinner with the kids is that you can often walk straight in to some of these no reservation restaurants and bag a table before the grown up dinnertime rush begins.

The evening menu at Granger and Co is a mix of Australian, Mediterranean and Asian influences all pulled together with the typical Bill Granger fresh and uncomplicated flair. We started with a plate of crispy squid with chilli and pepperberry, which our kids devoured in seconds so we promptly ordered another, it was the most delicious squid we’ve ever eaten! We then followed with a sweet, sticky and perfectly cooked Chilli Miso Salmon and a tasty but enormous belly pork and peanut salad. Desert was just as delicious, or so my kids tell me – a white chocolate and pistachio pavlova and a poached pear and ginger crumble rice pudding literally disappeared before my husband and I had a chance to grab our spoons.

The staff were really attentive and friendly, and had no problem with us propping our scooters up by the bar whilst we ate. We all thoroughly enjoyed this meal and can’t wait to go back for brunch to try Bill’s world famous ricotta hotcakes with banana and honeycomb butter.
